The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, also known as the Task Force, has successfully seized 668 commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okadas, during a week-long operation. This crackdown aims to enforce the state government’s ban on okadas on major highways and restricted roads. The operation, which began last Monday, targeted areas with high reports of crime linked to motorcycle use.
Task Force Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, noted that the operation covered several locations, including Ishaga, Ijegun Roundabout, and Volkswagen Bus Stop. These areas have seen numerous complaints about criminal activities, such as robbery and pickpocketing, often carried out by individuals using motorcycles. The enforcement team faced some resistance at Kola Bus Stop, where they were attacked by hoodlums, but they managed to disperse the crowd without any serious injuries and arrested seven suspects.
CSP Akerele warned stubborn okada riders that all seized motorcycles will undergo a court process before being destroyed, in line with Lagos law. He emphasized that the Task Force’s mission is to protect lives and property, insisting that those who refuse to comply will face legal consequences. This operation is part of a broader effort to reduce crime and enhance safety on Lagos roads.
