The Space Exploration & Research Agency (SERA) has launched a new process for selecting astronauts that allows Nigerians to participate in global space missions. This initiative, announced on October 1, aims to make space representation more democratic by letting citizens vote for their representatives through a secure blockchain platform. Nigeria, along with India, Indonesia, Brazil, and Thailand, will benefit from this community-driven approach.
SERA’s new selection method moves away from traditional astronaut programs, which often require military backgrounds or advanced degrees. Instead, anyone from the partner nations can apply and seek support from their communities. Joshua Skurla, co-founder of SERA, emphasized that this initiative allows individuals from diverse backgrounds to represent their countries in space based on community choice.
This program aligns with Nigeria’s goals for expanding its presence in space exploration beyond satellite technology. Dr. Felix Ale from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) noted that SERA’s approach reflects the aspirations of Nigeria’s diverse population. For the upcoming Blue Origin mission, six astronaut seats are available, five of which are reserved for the partner nations, while the sixth is open to global citizens.
