Research ICT Africa (RIA) has introduced the Just AI Framework of Inquiry, designed to guide the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in Africa. This framework aims to help policymakers, researchers, and tech experts navigate the complexities of AI while ensuring that it aligns with Africa’s unique social and economic contexts. The framework was launched as part of the second phase of the Africa Just AI project and emphasizes the importance of justice in AI governance.
The framework addresses various issues, including structural inequality, data justice, and environmental sustainability. By focusing on justice as a core principle, the Just AI Framework encourages a more inclusive approach to AI that reflects Africa’s diverse cultures and democratic values. RIA aims to shift the conversation from traditional governance models used in wealthier nations to one that resonates with Africa’s realities.
Moving forward, the taskforce will engage with various stakeholders, including government bodies and civil society, to implement the framework. This initiative seeks to empower African countries to become creators of AI technologies that meet their development priorities. By fostering collaboration and innovative thinking, RIA believes that Africa can lead in responsible AI governance and safeguard its future in the digital economy.
