Kaspersky has revealed the presence of malicious websites that are masquerading as popular software download sites to spread the TookPS Trojan-Downloader. This malware, first identified in early March, infects devices by allowing unauthorized remote access, compromising user security. Users are being lured to these fake sites under the guise of legitimate software like UltraViewer, AutoCAD, and SketchUp, only to end up downloading the Trojan instead.
Once installed, TookPS executes a series of scripts that open backdoors on the victim’s system, enabling attackers to perform malicious actions without detection. Kaspersky’s analysis indicates that the campaign targets both individuals and organizations, utilizing various popular software names to attract unsuspecting victims. Users are advised to remain vigilant, verify links, and avoid downloading pirated software to protect themselves from such threats.
In Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, the threat posed by malware like TookPS highlights the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures. With an increasing number of internet users and businesses online, awareness and proactive defense against such cyber threats are essential to safeguarding personal and organizational data in the telecom sector and beyond.
