The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has stated that the recently approved 50% increase in telecom tariffs by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) must lead to measurable improvements in service quality for consumers. In a press release, the FCCPC emphasized that consumers have consistently requested enhancements in service quality before any tariff hikes are implemented.
Key concerns cited by consumers include network congestion, dropped calls, inconsistent internet speeds, and poor customer service. The FCCPC stressed that any increase in tariffs should visibly translate into better services, including improved network reliability and customer support.
While acknowledging the economic pressures on telecom operators, the FCCPC praised the NCC for a thoughtful approach to the tariff adjustment, noting that the increase is significantly less than the over 100% initially proposed by operators. The FCCPC also highlighted the importance of transparency, requiring operators to clearly communicate tariff changes and provide upfront disclosures about costs.
In partnership with the NCC, the FCCPC is committed to ensuring that the tariff increase does not lead to exploitative practices but instead fosters fairness and accountability in the telecommunications sector.
