The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a 90-day ultimatum to telecommunications operators to resolve the issue of unclaimed and unused subscriber airtime. This directive was announced during a virtual stakeholders’ forum aimed at enhancing consumer rights within Nigeria’s telecom sector. Dr. Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman of NCC, emphasized the importance of protecting consumer interests, especially as mobile subscriptions grow and prepaid plans dominate the market.
The NCC’s proposed guidelines will allow subscribers to reclaim unused airtime within 12 months, provided they can verify ownership. Additionally, telecom operators are mandated to conduct audits of inactive accounts and ensure that any unused credit is returned to subscribers through various service options. Non-compliance with these new regulations could result in penalties, including regulatory audits.
This initiative reflects the NCC’s commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in the telecom industry, ultimately aiming to enhance consumer trust and satisfaction in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital environment.
