The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is urging Nigerians to take care when disposing of used batteries to avoid serious environmental and health risks. Batteries contain harmful chemicals like lead and cadmium, and if not disposed of properly, they can contaminate our soil and water, which can be dangerous for both people and wildlife. NESREA is stressing the need for recycling and using designated collection points to ensure that batteries are disposed of safely and in an eco-friendly manner.
The agency also cautioned against the risky habits of burning or dumping batteries in open spaces, as this can release toxic substances into the air and groundwater. NESREA is collaborating with various stakeholders, including manufacturers and waste management companies, to set up more battery recycling centers throughout the country. They are also launching public awareness campaigns to inform citizens about the dangers of improper battery disposal and the advantages of recycling.
This initiative is part of NESREA’s larger mission to promote sustainable environmental practices and safeguard public health. By encouraging proper battery disposal, the agency hopes to cut down on pollution, conserve our natural resources, and create a healthier environment for both present and future generations.
