The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is gearing up to take legal action against those caught printing National Identification Number (NIN) cards without authorization. They’ve made it clear that, for now, only the NIN slip is considered a valid form of ID, and any other versions are off-limits.
In a statement from Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, it was highlighted that there’s been a troubling rise in unauthorized printing by individuals and organizations. This often leaves unsuspecting citizens out of pocket, as they’re charged outrageous fees. NIMC stressed that this practice goes against the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.
The Commission has called on security agencies to step in and take action against anyone involved in these illegal activities. They also made it clear that no one has been given the green light to produce NIN cards, except for the upcoming General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), which is still in the works.
Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director-General of NIMC, shared that the GMPC will have multiple uses, including identity verification and payment options. It will be available for a fee, aiming to sidestep the issues faced with previous attempts to distribute free cards, many of which ended up unclaimed.
